When acts of violence strike schools and public spaces, the conversation that follows is often predictable. Headlines move fast. Emotions run high. And once again, calls grow louder for policies that promise safety while delivering very little of it.
At San Diego County Gun Owners, we believe moments like these require honesty, not slogans.
Real safety is not created by signs on a wall or policies that disarm responsible people. It is built on preparedness, personal responsibility, and the ability of regular people to protect themselves when danger appears.
Advocating for this message takes work. It takes showing up, engaging locally, and making sure policymakers hear from people who understand reality instead of political talking points.
Thank you for standing with us.

Tragedy Demands Honesty: Safety Cannot Be Outsourced
San Diego County Gun Owners (SDCGO) mourns the innocent lives lost and the families forever changed by the recent shootings, including the deadly attack at Brown University, Bondi Beach and other acts of violence involving schools and public spaces. These tragedies are devastating reminders that evil does not respect posted signs, school policy or the rule of Law.
In moments like this, our responsibility is not to reach for comforting slogans, but to speak honestly about how to achieve real safety.
For years, schools and campuses have been designated “gun-free zones” under the belief that banning lawful firearms would prevent violence. In practice, these policies create soft targets: places where criminals know resistance is minimal and where innocent people are left with little or no ability to meaningfully defend themselves when danger appears.
Safety is not the absence of danger.
Safety exists when individuals are capable of protecting themselves when danger appears.
Criminals do not obey gun-free zone laws. They exploit them. When responsible people are disarmed by policy, violence is not prevented; it is made easier. These policies mistakenly assume that someone else will arrive in time to stop the threat. Too often, history shows that help comes too late.
Real safety is rooted in personal responsibility and preparedness. We understand this in every other part of life. Pool safety is not banning swimming pools. It is knowing how to swim, understanding the risks, and being capable in the water. Fire safety is not banning electricity or stoves; it is knowing how to use them responsibly and how to respond when something goes wrong.
Firearm safety follows the same principle. You do not stay safe by pretending danger does not exist. You stay safe by being prepared to confront it and stop it before more harm is done.
Gun-free zones remove that ability. They take away the means of self-defense from regular people and replace it with hope that violence will politely avoid prohibited areas.
Hope is not a safety plan, or a good defense against criminal intent.
SDCGO believes that protecting life requires honesty about human nature and responsibility for one’s own safety. Empowering responsible individuals to defend themselves does not create violence; it reduces the opportunity for violence to succeed.
As all of our communities grieve, our hearts remain with those who were killed, those who were injured, and the families who will carry this loss forever. They deserved protection. They deserved policies and leadership grounded in common sense.
San Diego County Gun Owners will continue to advocate for real safety solutions that respect life, responsibility, and the fundamental right of peaceable people to protect themselves and those around them.
